November Vehicle Maintenance: What Should Drivers Check Before Holiday Travel?
November brings changes in driving patterns across the Grand Strand. Whether you are planning to travel to visit family, have seasonal visitors are arriving, keep in mind cooler mornings can affect tire pressure and vehicle performance.
Before a longer trip, it's worth checking several basic maintenance items.
Tire Pressure and Tread Condition
As outdoor temperatures decrease, tire pressure can drop. Underinflated tires may wear prematurely, reduce fuel efficiency, and affect handling. Check tire pressure when the tires are cold, using the manufacturer's recommended PSI found on the driver's door-jamb placard or in the owner's manual.
Inspect the tread for uneven wear, visible damage, and insufficient tread depth.
Battery Testing
Cooler temperatures can expose a battery that was already losing capacity. If your engine cranks slowly, the battery is several years old, or you've experienced recent starting problems, a professional battery and charging-system evaluation may be appropriate.
Battery condition, charging performance, and electrical connections should all be considered.
Oil Changes and Fluid Checks
Before a longer drive, check whether your vehicle is approaching its manufacturer-recommended oil-change interval. Engine oil helps lubricate moving components, manage heat, and carry contaminants to the oil filter.
At Cherry Grove Automotive, our oil-change service includes a multi-point vehicle inspection, checking tire pressure, and checking applicable fluid levels.
Brakes
Holiday traffic and wet roads make reliable braking especially important. If you notice squealing, grinding, pulsation, unusual pedal feel, or changes in stopping performance, have the braking system inspected.
Brake-pad thickness, rotor condition, hydraulic components, and other factors can influence repair recommendations.
Windshield Wipers and Exterior Lights
Shorter daylight hours mean more driving after dark. Check headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and windshield wipers. Replace worn wiper blades that streak, chatter, or leave areas of the windshield uncleared. Good visibility is especially important during heavy rain.
Why Does My Tire Pressure Warning Light Come On When It Gets Cold?
If your tire-pressure warning light appeared after a chilly November morning, you're not alone. Air pressure decreases as temperatures fall. As a general estimate, tire pressure changes approximately 1 PSI for every 10°F temperature change.
A tire that was already slightly underinflated may fall far enough below its recommended pressure to trigger the Tire Pressure Monitoring System, or TPMS, warning. A steady TPMS warning light usually indicates that one or more tires may be significantly underinflated.
A light that flashes before remaining illuminated can indicate a TPMS malfunction on many vehicles.
Don't automatically assume that colder weather is the only cause. A slow leak, damaged tire, or system problem may also be responsible. Check your tires with a pressure gauge when they're cold and inflate them to the vehicle manufacturer's specifications.
