Cars are complicated. Understanding the basics of how yours works shouldn't have to be.
Starting this week, we're going to spend a little more time helping you understand the vehicle you drive every day.
We'll take one part or system at a time and explain it in plain English. What does it do? How does it work? Where is it located? What happens when something starts going wrong? What symptoms might you notice? And how does a technician determine what's actually causing the problem? We're going to answer those questions.
Not because we expect you to diagnose or repair your own vehicle. That's our job.
We think you should understand what we're talking about when we tell you something needs attention.
We'll be publishing a new educational article each week, starting with the alternator.
What Are We Going to Talk About?
Pretty much anything that helps your vehicle start, stop, steer, cool, charge, move, and keep you comfortable along the way.
We'll cover batteries, starters, alternators, brakes, cooling systems, air conditioning, suspension, steering, tires, belts, sensors, and other parts and systems that quietly do their jobs every time you drive.
Sometimes we'll take you under the hood. Other times we'll explain what's happening underneath your vehicle or behind the dashboard.
We'll talk about individual components, but we'll also explain how different systems work together.
A problem that looks like a bad battery, for example, isn't necessarily a battery problem. The battery, starter, alternator, wiring, connections, and other components can all play a role in what you're experiencing. That's where understanding how the system works becomes useful.
We Want to Explain the Why
There is plenty of automotive information online telling you the signs that something might be wrong. We want to go further and explain why.
What Does the Part Actually Do?
Before we talk about what happens when something fails, we'll explain what the component is supposed to be doing in the first place.
Where is it located? What does it do? What other parts does it work with? What is happening when everything is operating normally?
You shouldn't need an automotive background to understand the answer.
What Happens When Something Goes Wrong?
We'll explain the symptoms a driver might actually notice.
That could mean a warning light, a strange noise, a vibration, difficulty starting, uneven tire wear, a change in braking, an air conditioner that suddenly isn't cooling, or something that simply doesn't feel the way it normally does.
We'll also explain why one symptom doesn't always point to one specific failed part.
How Do Technicians Figure Out What's Wrong?
This is an important part of understanding your vehicle. Replacing a part because it might be the problem isn't the same thing as diagnosing the vehicle.
We'll explain how technicians approach different problems, what systems may need to be checked, why testing matters, and why sometimes several possible causes need to be ruled out before the actual problem can be identified.
Why Can the Same Repair Be Different From One Vehicle to Another?
This is one of the most misunderstood parts of automotive repair, and we're going to talk about it. Two vehicles can need the same type of component and require very different repair procedures.
Manufacturers design and package vehicles differently. A component that is relatively easy to access on one vehicle may be located behind or underneath several other components on another. Those components may need to be removed or repositioned before a technician can even reach the part being replaced.
Whenever it makes sense, we'll show you real examples.
We'll explain where a component is located, what may have to happen to reach it, and why vehicle design can affect the time and labor involved in a repair. The point isn't to make automotive repair sound complicated.
It's to help you understand what you're paying for and why.
We're Not Going to Diagnose Your Car Through a Blog
We should probably establish this right from the beginning.
These articles are educational.
If we tell you that flickering lights can be associated with a charging-system problem, that doesn't mean every vehicle with flickering lights needs an alternator.
If we explain that a vibration while braking can involve the braking system, that doesn't mean we've diagnosed your vehicle from a symptom.
Modern vehicles have interconnected mechanical, electrical, and computer-controlled systems. Similar symptoms can have very different causes.
We'll explain what symptoms can mean and how the systems work, but determining what is actually wrong with a particular vehicle still requires proper inspection and testing.
Ask Questions About Your Vehicle
There's another part of this that we really want to encourage.
Ask questions.
If there's a part of your vehicle you've always wondered about, tell us.
If you've heard an automotive term for years and have absolutely no idea what it means, that's fair game too. If customers keep asking us the same question at the shop, there's a pretty good chance we'll turn it into an article.
These aren't supposed to be automotive textbooks.
They're supposed to answer the questions real drivers have about the vehicles they drive every day.
First Up: What Does Your Alternator Actually Do?
We're starting with a component almost every vehicle owner has heard of, but a lot of people aren't entirely sure what it does.
The alternator.
Does the alternator charge your battery?
How does it work with the battery and starter?
Why can a failing alternator sometimes look like a bad battery?
What is actually inside an alternator?
How does a technician test the charging system?
And why can replacing an alternator be relatively straightforward on one vehicle and considerably more involved on another?
That's where we're starting.
After that, we'll choose another part or system and do it again.
One subject at a time.
Understanding Your Vehicle With Cherry Grove Automotive
You don't need to know how to rebuild an engine to understand the basics of what's happening underneath your hood.
You don't need to know every component in your braking system to understand why we're recommending a repair.
And you certainly don't need to become a technician just because you own a vehicle.
But when you're spending money maintaining and repairing something you depend on every day, we think you should be able to understand what it needs and why.
That's what these articles are going to be about.
You don't need to know everything about your vehicle, but we do think you deserve to understand it.
