August in North Myrtle Beach: Stay Cool, Stay Safe, and Keep Your Car Road-Ready

Can you believe it’s August already? Summer’s flying by faster than a beach umbrella in hurricane season. Speaking of storms—Erin is expected to be a category 4 hurricane, forecasted to stay out in the Atlantic (thankfully), but hurricane season is far from over here on the Grand Strand. It’s a good reminder to make sure your car is as prepared as your emergency kit.

Keep Your Ride Smooth with Our August Suspension Special!

Your suspension system does more than keep your ride comfortable — it’s critical for safety, handling, and protecting the life of your tires. If you’ve been noticing a rougher ride, unusual noises, or your vehicle pulling to one side, now is the perfect time to have it checked.

This August, Cherry Grove Automotive is offering 10% off suspension repairs, up to $150 in savings. Our certified technicians will inspect and repair key components like shocks, struts, control arms, and bushings to ensure your vehicle is performing at its best.

How to Tell if Your Suspension Needs Attention

Your suspension system works hard every time you drive, and over time, parts wear out. Here are some common signs it’s time to get it checked:

  • Bumpy or Rough Ride – If you feel every crack and bump in the road, your shocks or struts may be worn.

  • Vehicle Pulling or Drifting – Your car should track straight; pulling to one side can indicate suspension or alignment issues.

  • Uneven Tire Wear – Worn suspension parts can cause your tires to wear faster on one side.

  • Dips When Stopping – If the front end of your car nose-dives when you brake, your shocks may be failing.

  • Clunking or Knocking Sounds – Strange noises when hitting bumps often point to worn suspension components.

Catching suspension issues early can save you money and help avoid larger repairs down the road. Our August Suspension Special — 10% off, up to $150 in savings — is the perfect time to have it checked.

Here’s what you need to know to keep your vehicle (and your driving habits) road-ready this month.

🛑 School's Back August 18 – Expect Bus Traffic and Slow Zones

Horry County Schools resume classes on August 18, which means school buses will be back in operation across the Grand Strand. Expect slower commutes during morning and afternoon hours—especially around school zones in North Myrtle Beach, Little River, Loris, and Conway.

🚌 Reminder: South Carolina law requires all drivers to stop for school buses when the stop arm is out—no exceptions. If your brakes are feeling spongy or overdue for service, now is the time to give us a call. Stay safe around buses, bikes, and backpacks.

🍑 South Carolina Peaches: A Juicy History—and Why Your Car Needs to Be Road-Ready

South Carolina might be famous for its beachfront vacations, Myrtle Beach attractions, and gallons of sweet tea, but for many locals and travelers alike, the real southern gem is the South Carolina peach. Believe it or not, our beloved summer fruit didn’t originate here—it has roots that stretch across continents.

Peaches were first introduced to North America in the mid-1500s by Spanish explorers and Franciscan monks planting trees around St. Augustine, Florida. As early European settlers and Indigenous communities traded seeds and cuttings, the peach tree spread through Virginia and Maryland. By the 1700s, Native American tribes were growing peach orchards across Georgia and South Carolina. When colonists arrived in Charleston in 1670, they discovered established groves already thriving—descendants of those original Spanish plantings.

While South Carolina peach farming didn’t boom until later, things took off in the mid-1800s during the railroad expansion era. Commercial peach growers quickly set up shop along new rail lines, building packing sheds right next to the tracks for fast shipment. These pioneering farmers laid the foundation for today's thriving South Carolina peach industry, many of them now third-, fourth-, or even fifth-generation peach producers.

After the boll weevil devastated cotton crops in the 1920s, many farmers turned to peach production as their saving grace. By the 1940s and ’50s, South Carolina orchards were in full swing. In 1984, the state harvested a record-breaking 480,000 tons of peaches, and the peach officially earned its place as the state fruit of South Carolina.

Today, the Palmetto State is the second-largest peach producer in the U.S., outpacing Georgia—yes, even though it’s called the “Peach State.” South Carolina grows over 18,000 acres of peach trees, produces around 60,000 tons of peaches annually, and supports an $80 million peach economy. With peach festivals, roadside stands, and orchard tours, summer is prime time to explore the best peaches this side of the Smokies.

🌾 Country Markets in Horry County: Fresh, Local, and Full of Flavor

One of the best things about living in Horry County—aside from the beach breeze and friendly neighbors—is the abundance of country markets that bring farm-fresh goods right to our community. Whether you’re hunting for vine-ripened tomatoes, fresh-caught seafood, or that just-right jar of local honey, you don’t have to look far. These small markets aren’t just charming—they’re packed with local flavor, and they support the hardworking farmers, beekeepers, and fishers who keep South Carolina’s agricultural roots alive and thriving.

From Conway to North Myrtle Beach, the area is dotted with roadside stands and family-run markets offering everything from sweet corn and watermelon to pasture-raised eggs and handmade jams. The produce isn’t trucked in from across the country—it’s usually picked the same day or the day before. That’s the kind of freshness you can taste. No waxy apples or sad, pale tomatoes here—just juicy, real food straight from the source. And let’s be honest: once you taste a homegrown tomato from a local stand, it’s game over for grocery store ones forever.

One of my new favorite spots is Low Country Market, located right on Highway 90 in Longs. Tucked away just enough to feel like a hidden treasure, this market is everything you want in a local shop. They carry local honey that’s perfect for allergy season (and tea), farm-fresh eggs with yolks so golden they practically glow, and—this is huge—they’ve just added a fresh seafood market right next door. Yup, you read that right: fresh, local seafood in Longs, located at 6951 Highway 90 (just past Bistro 90, another of our favorite places, and right before the Speedway on the right-hand side). You can literally grab your eggs, honey, produce, and shrimp in one swoop.

Markets like Low Country bring the convenience of a mini-grocery with the soul of a family farm. You’re not just buying food—you’re supporting the local economy, lowering your carbon footprint, and eating seasonally. Plus, it’s fun! There's something satisfying about choosing your own peaches or chatting with the person who gathered the eggs you’re about to scramble.

Whether you’re prepping for Sunday dinner or just craving something that wasn’t sprayed, shipped, and chilled for a week before hitting shelves, Horry County’s country markets are the answer. And if you haven’t done the Highway 90 loop lately, this is your sign to go. Between Longs, Conway, and Little River, there are dozens of locally owned spots worth checking out.

At Cherry Grove Automotive, we’re all about supporting local—from businesses to farms.

If you can't make it to the Low Country Market there is always-
