North Myrtle Beach friends, it feels seriously cold outside, and this is the kind of weather that can turn a “quick errand” into a no-start situation fast. Cold temps don’t just feel miserable, they can expose weak batteries, low tire pressure, old wiper blades, and coolant issues real quick.
Here are a few easy things you can do now to avoid problems later:
Check your battery before it checks out on you-
If your car is slow to crank, struggling to start, or you’ve needed a jump recently, don’t ignore it. Cold weather is when weak batteries tap out. If your battery is 3 to 5 years old, it might be time to test it.
Your tire pressure WILL drop-
Cold air shrinks, and tire pressure drops with it. If your TPMS light pops on, it doesn’t always mean you have a nail, it might just mean the temperature dropped overnight. Check your PSI and inflate to the sticker inside your driver door, not the number on the tire.
Keep your gas tank above a little fuller-
We know gas is expensive, but running super low in freezing temps can cause issues, and if you get stuck in traffic or have to idle for heat, you’ll be glad you have it.
Make sure your coolant is actually protecting you-
Coolant is not just for summer. It helps prevent freezing and protects your engine. If your heat isn’t blowing hot, your temp gauge is acting weird, or you’ve noticed coolant leaks, get it checked before the weekend hits.
Don’t forget your windshield washer fluid-
If you’re using water or summer mix, it can freeze. Make sure you’ve got proper washer fluid so you can still see if the roads are wet, salty, or messy.
Wipers and defrost matter more than you think-
If your wipers are streaking or skipping, replace them now. Also, if your defrost takes forever or your windows fog up badly, you may have an airflow issue or need a cabin air filter.
Pack a mini “just in case” kit-
Blanket, flashlight, phone charger, water, and a small towel. Even in North Myrtle Beach, cold is cold when you’re stuck on the side of the road.
If you need a battery test, tire pressure check, or a quick winter safety inspection, give us a call and we’ll get you taken care of as soon as possible. Stay warm, drive safe, and don’t wait until your car decides to have an attitude in the cold.
